MONSOON ILLNESSES

Dengue – Part I Dengue has become a global problem. It spreads by mosquito bite of several species of the Aedes type, usually Aedes Aegypti. There are 5 different types of the virus from Type I to Type V. The incubation period is 3 to 14 days. Characteristic symptoms of Dengue would be sudden onset of fever, headache, muscle and joint pains and a rash. Fever is usually high with nausea and vomiting being common. WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW ABOUT THE DISEASE It is caused by Dengue Virus. A measles-like rash occurs generally between day 4 to day 7. It can be bleeding spots or petechiae. There are 3 stages of the disease. Stage I to Stage III Stage I - Fever which lasts for 4 to 7 days. Stage II - When fever resolves but most complications occur. There is leakage of fluids from blood vessels and accumulation in the chest and abdomen. Hepatic failure, renal failure and respiratory failure can occur. Fluid depletion can give rise to a state called DENGUE SHOCK

Immunizaton is a very important aspect of medical practice both in Paediatric and adult population. Diseases that can be prevented by Immunization in childhood are Polio, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, TB, Diptheria, Pertussis, Tetanus, Hib and Rotavirus. 1. Misconception : There is nothing we can do to prevent hypertension. Truth : Even if a person is having many risk factors, few steps taken can help controlling – preventing high BP ; like : • Weight control • Healthy food habits • Low salt • Regular exercise • Avoiding stress 2. Misconception : One abnormal reading of high BP means I have hypertension. Truth : One abnormal reading is not enough, a doctor can diagnose hypertension only after taking several BP readings over a period of time. 3. Misconception : I don’t use table salt, so I am in control of my salt intake. Truth : 75% of sodium we consume is hidden in processed foods like sauces, soups, canned food, butter , cheese.
